Preface for the Data Collection of '96-'98 Observations

This collection is a compilation of data acquired during the fiscal 1996-1998 PEACAMPOT II (the Perturbation by the East Asian Continental Air Mass to the Pacific Oceanic Troposphere Phase 2) aircraft and consolidated ground-based observations, which were funded by the Global Environment Research Fund of the Environment Agency.

On the basis of the APARE (the East Asian/North Pacific Regional Experiment) of the IGAC (International Global Atmospheric Chemistry) Program, the Acid Deposition Research Team of the Global Environment Division, National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), has been conducting aircraft observations over the seas between Japan and the Asian mainland and ground-based observations in their peripheries since fiscal 1991, as a cooperative effort with researchers from numerous other institutions.

From FY 1996 to 1998, PEACAMPOT II was conducted as part of a project of the Global Environment Research Fund of the Environment Agency of Japan called "Studies on the Development of a Comprehensive Model of Atmosphere and Soil and an International Cooperative Field Survey to Clarify the Budget of Environment-Acidifying Substances in East Asia". The target area was confined to the northern East China Sea to determine the transport of air pollutants from central China. Ground-based observations were made on Fukue Island. Now that data obtained over the area have been added to the existing database.

The data obtained by the fiscal 1991-1995 PEACAMPOT observations have already been published as a CD-ROM of Center for Global Environmental Research, NIES. This CD-ROM is the succession to the above data collection for the fiscal 1991-1995 observations. I would like to express my gratitude to the authors of this volume, especially to the editor, Dr. Shiro Hatakeyama, who is the Leader of the Chemical Reaction Section in Atmospheric Environment Division (having a multiple job with the Acid Deposition Research Team of the Global Environment Research Division), NIES. This collection is a compilation of important data on the long-distance transport of atmospheric pollutants in East Asia obtained by observations conducted by many researchers. It is my hope that it will be of use to many people.
