Purpose of compiling Lake kasumigaura Database

NIES conducted several basic studies on the Lake Kasumigaura for nearly 20 years since its establishment. A vast amount of data on water quality and other variables were collected during this period. However, it was not possible for various reasons to synthesize results from all surveys on the Lake Kasumigaura to share with researchers in Japan and abroad. Since some data were compiled for each variable and archived, while some were missing, the studies were not able to provide a comprehensive view of the Lake Kasumigaura.

The purpose of data management and documentation is to obtain, evaluate, and archive data for open promotion of the GEMS/Water project. We have contributed to researchers at home and abroad by giving model packages and to the general public by compiling data that permits a comprehensive view of the Lake Kasumigaura, while providing the baseline data for the GEMS/Water Lake Kasumigaura monitoring projects. The baseline data will also be used in performing advanced research and in policy-making related to the preservation of lakes and marshlands, such as Lake Kasumigaura.

Makeup of Lake Kasumigaura Database

This database contains many factors such as meteorological conditions, water quality, and biota at various observation points. Data analysis section includes the outline of measurement methods and results for each factor concerning the Lake Kasumigaura. The database profile consists of the measurement points, measurement items, and names of researchers in-charge of the field survey. In addition, it includes bibliography of literature collected by organizations associated with the Lake Kasumigaura and measurement lists collected by organizations other than NIES. Chronological tables of the Lake Kasumigaura are also compiled and presented as related information. Various environmental topics, facts and feature-guides of the Lake Kasumigaura were collected and reported. The time series data were collected as of the end of December 1998.
