The Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite “IBUKI” (GOSAT) is the world’s first satellite designed specifically to monitor greenhouse gases from space. Since its launch on January 23, 2009, the satellite has continued to fulfill its main mission to monitor concentrations and variations of atmospheric carbon dioxide and methane from space, and to improve the accuracy of carbon sink/source estimates. The GOSAT project has been proceeded jointly by three parties: the Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Japan, the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
This is a report on the progresses and achievements of the whole GOSAT project promoted by the three parties with a focus on the NIES GOSAT Project since the satellite launch in FY 2008, and intensively from FY 2009, when the first GOSAT data products were released to the public, to FY 2010.
