Comment

I am so glad to receive this famous award in “Geo Delft 2018”. I want to say ‘thank you’ to my research team members for their precious ideas and useful suggestions. In addition, I am so grateful that our institute provided me with this opportunity. Without this support, we could not have won this honor.

As is known to all, road traffic CO2 emissions are a large contributor to city emissions. In this research, we focused on exploring a bottom-up approach for better understanding road traffic emissions at the urban scale. Based on detailed traffic conditions from the national traffic census, we succeeded in quantifying the CO2 emissions by road segment level in cities in Japan. In our approach, the emissions calculated from each road segment were associated with various parameters e.g. traffic flow, road classification, road length, and average vehicle speed. We believe that this study could better support policy making on local climate mitigation in the future.

In the next step, we will try our best to improve our work to effectively support our society.
